Sacred Urn
(#033)

PurplePot PurplePot
PurplePot PurplePot

This piece was a unique project. My sister-in-law had a very strong attachment to a cat she had most of her life.
The cat recently passes away and she had her remains cremated. The animal hospital provided the remains in a lovely
velvet bag. My sister-in-law wanted to provide her beloved cat a more proper resting place so she asked me to design her a urn.
This is the result of her request. The piece is made of Camphor and the accent ring is made of Wenge and Maple with Maple and Ebony veneers.
As an accent I burned two accent lines on the base and add an engraved plaque on the top.

Measures: 9" tall X 5 1/2" diameter.  Finished with 4 coats of poly.

Bowl From a Board
(#030)

This bowl was constructed using the bowl from a board method.  The piece started as eight separate boards that I
laminated into two identical half sheets.  Using my band saw at a tilt of 45 degrees I cut half rings out of each board half.
As I progressed toward the center I increased the title angle to allow for a slight curve.  Each ring half was then glued
to form a complete ring.  Each ring was stacked in the reverse order it was cut to form the rough shape.  The thin line in the
middle is a maple veneer.

Made of: (left to right) Peruvian Walnut, Peruvian Cherry, African Padauk, and Purple Heart.
Measures: 9" tall X 16" diameter.  Finished with 4 coats of Poly.

My Ribbon:

Made of Poplar and Walnut.  Measures approximately 10" tall X 8" Diameter.  Finished with three coats of poly.

This was my first attempt at creating a ribbon.  Overall, I am happy about the results.  Since this was my first attempt, I choose
to keep the pattern simple (no lamination) and I used inexpensive wood.  I did not spend a tremendous amount of time
fine sanding this piece as I was only constructing it for the learning experience.  Throughout the process I did learn
quite a few tips on how to make the next one better.

I would like to thank Malcolm J Tibbetts for sharing his techniques with the turning community.
